Daughter wears mom's 1988 dress to prom

At Saturday night’s Marysville High School prom, Kallie Breshears, 16, wore the same prom dress, that her mother, Regina Satterfield Breshears, wore to her prom 25 years ago at Labette County High School in Altamont.
The strapless red gown featured a beaded bodice and a skirt of layered taffeta ruffles.
Each layer of ruffles was held together with fishing line.
“It shows that the clothing styles come full circle,” said Regina, whose parents bought the dress for her at a bridal store in Joplin, Mo. “It was pretty pricey at the time, but Dad said if I find something I really like, I can get it. Mom told me later that she was the one who convinced Dad to buy it.”
Regina’s parents are Rob and Becky Satterfield, Marysville.
They bought the dress for $398, Regina said, adding that clothing prices have dropped over the years.
“The dress was way ahead of its time,” she said. “There were no dresses in that design or style like it at my prom.”
Breshears said the dress was in good shape when she took it out of the closet last August to show her twin daughters, Kallie and Kassie, 16.
Right away Kallie said she wanted to wear it to the prom. About Christmas, she got the size 2 dress out again for Kallie to try on, and it fit perfectly. It needed a few touch-ups and to be fluffed out, so they took it to a seamstress in Leonardville.
The dress is a style Kallie likes, Regina said.
“It was a frilly girly-girl dress, and that’s her style. Kassie is not into such a girly-girl dress, so it wasn’t an issue over who would wear it. Each of the twins has their own style and their own clothing preferences.”
Kassie, who always said she wanted a bright blue prom dress, selected a navy blue strapless gown. Kallie and Regina helped her pick it out.
“It was an emotional night for me, seeing Kallie in my prom dress and seeing my ‘tom boy’ Kassie in a formal dress,” Regina said. “They had their hair fixed alike, and for the first time in a while, they looked like twins.”
Regina dressed the girls alike until kindergarten, when each developed her own preferences in clothes.
Regina’s accessories at her prom were long red gloves, which were in style at the time, with a wrist corsage over the glove.
Kallie didn’t wear gloves, but had a similar wrist corsage, given to her by her date, Triston Hormann. The only difference was that Kallie’s corsage lit up and was on a zebra-design bracelet with cascading beading.
“I had a blast in the dress,” she said. “Even though it had a lot of ruffles, beading and lots of underskirts, it was lightweight and fun and easy to dance in. I danced all night. My favorite part of the dress was to hold it out when I danced.”
Kallie said red is her favorite color in clothing.
Regina said it was fun to see the reactions from her daughter’s friends after they learned Kallie was wearing her mother’s prom dress.
“They asked me when I graduated, and they were amazed that the style was way ahead of its time,” she said. “Everyone said it didn’t look like anything from the ’80s.”
When Kallie told her friends it was her mom’s prom dress, most reacted with “I can’t believe it.”
“I had fun with the dress,” Kallie said. “My friends thought it was really cool that it was the same material of their ‘new’ dresses, and that it was my mom’s dress and it was the style of today.”
Kallie said she probably won’t wear it again next year. She plans to go shopping for a new dress for her senior prom.
Regina put the dress back into the closet for storage. She has another set of twin girls, Karly and Krista, 12, seventh-graders at MJHS. Perhaps one of them will want to wear the dress when they go to prom in a few years.
And if they don’t, maybe little sister, Kaytee, 3, will wear it when it’s time for her prom.
2013 MHS Prom
“Mystery and Magic” was the theme of the Marysville High School Prom Saturday night at the Lee Dam Center for Fine Art. Colors of the masquerade-type theme included purple, teal, gold and black.
Juniors and seniors and their guests moved on to the “Under the Sea in 2013” after-prom party in the junior-senior high cafeteria.
A total 110 of the 121 MHS students attended after-prom, which is a 91 percent turnout, according to Davanie Nietfeld, after-prom chairman.
The underwater theme featured black light and SpongeBob characters. The black light miniature golf course from the Dawg House was set up in the junior high hallway.
There were four large blow-up games, including a climbing mountain, an obstacle course, lava pit and a large human foosball game. Other games included a flipper race, poker and blackjack.
A photo booth was inside SpongeBob’s pineapple house. All the photos from that night will be uploaded to a shared photo room, which the students and parents will have access to, Nietfeld said.
